Safety concerns: More than 100 Delhi hotels have licenses suspended

The wave of suspensions comes after the deadly fire at a Delhi
hotel which claimed 17 lives.

Less than a week after a fire at a hotel there claimed the lives
of 17 people, Delhi
Fire Services
(DFS) moved to suspend the licenses of 105 hotels
operating in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi, officials
said.

“As part of an ongoing drive to suspend licences of hotels
running in Karol Bagh area in violation of the safety rules issued
by the fire department, we have inspected 145 hotels of which
licences of 105 have been suspended,” a fire services official
told India news service,
IANS
.

Wide-scale inspections

Currently, records show there are roughly 300 hotels operating
in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area. The DFS team, officials said, will
inspect each one of those properties.

The fact that they’ve already suspended the licenses of 105
operators is obviously significant, given that number is more than
one third of the properties in the area.

Consequently, the news paints a picture of widespread safety
concerns throughout the hotel industry there.

The impetus for this enforcement was last week’s lethal
fire.

Aftermath of the fire

The fire which claimed the lives of 17 happened at Hotel Arpit
Palace on February 12.

This property is in the heart of the congested Karol Bagh area.
In addition to those who perished, 35 more people had to be rescued
from the flames.

In the aftermath of the fire, the Delhi Police Crime Branch
department arrested the hotel’s owner.

For those who are unfamiliar, the Karol Bagh area is a mixed
one, consisting of both residential and commercial properties, with
the commercial development having been added in recent years.

The nearby neighbourhood is known for its shopping avenues,
including the Ghaffar Market and Ajmal Khan Road.
